Bad check case in Caribou leads to 2 more arrests Woman charged in theft by deception, two men face gun charges
WOODLAND, Maine — The arrest of a Caribou woman Tuesday on a charge involving passing bad checks also led to the arrest of two men on felony gun charges.
Officer Doug Bell of the Caribou Police Department said Wednesday that the incident began Tuesday when the department received a complaint from a local business. The business had received checks for more than $1,000 on a closed account.
Bell said he had enough evidence to secure a search warrant, which was carried out at a residence on Woodland Center Road in Woodland.
Police arrested Crystal Doherty, 26, of Caribou on a charge of felony theft by deception.
Bell said he already was working on a bad check case involving Doherty when information from the local business came in to the police department. He added that some of the property allegedly purchased with the checks written on the closed account was recovered at the residence.
Doherty also was arrested and charged with possession of OxyContin and failure to appear. Her bail was set at $5,200 cash or $10,400 surety. She was unable to make bail and was taken to the Aroostook County Jail in Houlton.
During the search, police also recovered a loaded firearm. Bell said Emilien Gorneault, 52, was renting the property and was in possession of the gun.
The officer said that Gorneault, a felon, is not allowed to possess a firearm. He was arrested and charged with possession of a firearm by a prohibited person, a felony. Bail was set at $10,000 cash or $50,000 surety. He was able to make bail and was released.
Carlton Jackson Jr., 40, of Caribou, also was charged with possession of a firearm by a prohibited person stemming from the incident. His bail was set at $10,000 cash or $50,000 surety. He could not make bail and was taken to the Aroostook County Jail.
Bell, the primary investigator on the case, said Wednesday that the case remains under investigation and more charges could be filed.
