ORLAND, Maine — A 14-year-old Orland boy died Wednesday evening when he was struck by a pickup truck while riding his bicycle.

According to Chief Deputy Dick Bishop of the Hancock County Sheriff’s Department, the boy, whose name was not released, was riding his bicycle with three friends on Narramissic Drive at about 6:38 p.m. Wednesday. The boy was out in front of the other boys and rode out onto Route 1 into the path of a westbound pickup truck. The pickup truck struck the boy, who died at the scene.

The driver of the pickup was a 65-year-old Bangor man whose name also was not released.

Emergency crews from the Orland and Bucksport Fire Departments closed a section of Route 1 to traffic and directed traffic down Route 175 through Orland Village. The road remained closed for several hours while sheriff’s deputies reconstructed the accident.
